My 2 girls from Umass left, as did Steven and his ccrew, so my last few days will be quieter.  Though I think I could use a little relaxation time to do jack shit.  Came back from a big adventure in the Big Island, so my plunges from heights, and deadly encounters with heat will be shown soon!

Oahu Island Adventures

So my sister, her friend Ed and my cousin Amber came to visit last week, and like I said it was pretty action packed.  Being here for many weeks, I served as a tour guide / activity organizer.  Day one, on our way to Kailua Beach, taking the Kamehamea Highway up the windward coast, we stopped at Makapuu point, where there is an easy hike up to the hill to a cliffside overlooking the east.  However there was also what seemed to be a trail leading up the backface of the hill, on the side of the ocean.  I saw some people climbing up that way last time, so I figured lets go this way for a lil challenge and to hopefully see nicer views as well.  The trail turned out to be quite the difficult cllimb through rocks and brush, sometimes redcued to a tiny strip wrapping around the side of the mountain with blustering winds and the surf pounding on the rocks below--quite scary I gotta say.  But we had gone too far, and there was no turning back.  Each time we reached a new portion, I felt it was less and less travelled, and wondered if this was still a real trail anymore!  It was tricky at times, but we made it to the lighthouse and lookout point where the normal trail merges.  The view was amazing!  I think it is the eastern-most tip of the island of Oahu as well.  Along the mountain side were many old bunkers and lookout points used during WWII to watch for an attack by the Japanense.  You could also see many humpback whales in the distant water, since they come to mate during the winter season in Hawaii.  We saw a whole bunch of them, bllowholes, tails, and even leaping all the way out of the water.  Quite an amazing site!  We decided to take the easy trail down with all the tourists, a nice paved road back to the mountain road.  We scoffed at the simplicity of the descent.  We just scaled a mountain, we can handle it all.

In the afternoon we made it to Kailua Beach.  Here the plan was to rent a couple of sea kayaks, and head out to sea.  My intention was to kayak out to one of the two little islands that sit off the coast of Lanikai beach, which is the private beach just next to Kailua.  Sure they looked far, but nothing we can't handle right?  Amber and I got in one kayak, Noreen and Ed in the other.  It took a while to get the hang of the synchronous rowing required to navigate the ocean water, but it wasn't too bad, just crazy tiring!  So we head out to the east, seeing the 2 little islands in the distance (see the picture from Lanikai beach).  Maybe 25 min later, we were at the start of Lanikai beach, but those isalnds still looked hella far away!  I was tired as hell, and the girls were ready to give up.  So we went to Lanikai beach to rest and relax.  We had some sandwhiches and drinks, and got in some beach time.  The girls had about given up, but I was determined to reach our goal.  So me and Eddie hopped in a kayak and set out. By now we were tired but used to the burn and just plowed through.  There was some heavy areas of coral, which was difficult to navigate through, and kind of scary at times as well.  20 min later, we approached the little beach of the island, and big waves breaking in from both sides made it kinda tricky, but we managed to make it to shore, where a few other kayakers were relaxing, eating, and even fishing from the rocks a few hundred yards away.  Too bad we had no camera, because the view from there was awesome!!  You could see a great view of the windward coast up and down, with the mountains just behind, shadowing away in the distance. Amazing.

We also managed to hit up the North Shore and sunset beach, checked out Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona memorial, which was cool and interesting, but of course the other crazy thing we did was skydiving!  I tell you it was pretty damn scary, but what an awesome experience!  And what better place to do it than lovely Hawaii?  The skies were clear and blue, and from 14,000 feet in the air you can see an amazing view of the Oahu coastline, mountains, waves, and even whales.  It is an odd experience jumping out of a plane with a man strapped to your back, and it is quite expensive, but it is definitely something to experience.  The scariest was when the door opened and people just started jumping out.  When I got to the door it was like holy shit, this is pretty high!  And then down you go.  The freefall was pretty amazing.  Then you are just flying in the wind, your skin flapping off your bones as you plummet at 150 mph.  And then the gentle sore down as you glide to the ground.  The whole thing was almost a blur to me, like a dream.  I think I popped one of my adrenal glands too.  But definintely a worthwhile experience.  If it wasnt so expensive, I'd go again.

More Island Encounters

Another week past, another day closer to leaving lovely Hawaii.  I do miss nyc, but I dread coming bcak from paradise to cold and snow.  Definitely gotta make the most of the last couple of weeks!  This past week of work was a joke since I went in for 2 days out of the 5, so I can't complain.  I been enjoying my converitible to the fullest, getting blacker by the minute to pay the price, but definitely cruising with style (despite half of the tourists having the same rental convertible as me).

So the random encounters also continue.  My friend Steve (the first one I randomly ran into) had some friends come to Oahu for the week so he had a bbq at his house and we all hung out.  One guy is from his school, and his girlfriend is just from nyc, who happened to go to Yale.  Her name sounded really familiar, but it was so generic for Koreans I was like whatever.  Upon further conversation, I discovered she knows some of my friends from Yale.  Then I started thinking that she really looks familiar.  So I texted my friend Do the next day, and he confirmed with me that I have met her.  He said, "Dude.  That's the girl that Vinny burned in the neck with a cigarette in that rave in Hartford."  As bizzare as it was, it all came back to me.  Then I asked her the next day, "Did you get burned by some dude named Vinny?"  Sure enough she did.  And then she realized that I too was at that rave.  Crazy.

The second random encounter was during my second stint in surfing.  This time I took a lesson with my friend Jenn, and we actually did OK compared to when I went out solo.  Probably because he kept giving me a little push to compensate for my weak paddling and allowed me to catch the wave.  So basically we paid the guy 35$ to push us.  But at least I surfed.  So during my last run, I almost run over this girl, who was this fit looking Indian girl.  I was like wow, I seen only about 3 so far.  Then I looked closely, and realized I knew her.  It was this chick from NY med who went to undergrad with my roomate.  Good lord.  Oahu really is a small island!

It was quite an eventful week (especially since my sis and her bf and my cuz are here visiting) including an amazing hike up Makapuu point, another trip to the north shore, more fantastic Ahi sushi, kayaking in Kailua, Pearl Harbor, and of course, jumping out of a plane at 14,000 feet!!  The fun never seems to end.  I'll post pics when i get a chance!

Windward Oahu

Yes, I have sand in my pockets as I sit here on my bed. In fact there is sand in my bed, and on my floor, but it's all good. I feel now I really am an Islander. I wake up and put on sunblock as routinely as my deoderant. I wear my swimming trunks (or my stylish boarding shorts if you will) almost all the time--always prepared for an encounter with the ocean. And I go everywhere in my sturdy Reef flip flops (or slippers as the locals say) that I purchased here. I've even become nice to everyone, including the crappy servers you get at restaurants, and I also stopped J-walking (which is frowned upon here). I mean shit, I live in paradise.

I took my second stab at bodyboarding today. After googling on how to actually do it, and watching someone give a listen, I think my skills are improving. Of course I cut myself on the coral yet again, the knee this time. I gotta find a new spot! Tomorrow will be surfing part 2, I may actually take a lesson with someone, so we'll see how much better formal training can make me.. We also took the hike to Manoa Falls yesterday. Just beyond University of Hawaii, it is a short hike up some moderately rocky and muddy terrain following back a stream which originates in a little pool fed by a peaceful waterfall. A nice short 1hr or so round trip hike that is perfect for after school or work.

Today was a big day for me, because I just got my rental car. A convertible Seabring ( I think it's a chrysler). Only a little more than the full size, I figured why not? And man is it worth it. I took the day off from work, and had my morning bodyboarding session, and then picked up the wheels at 2pm. I then head out towards the southeast and the windward coast--and man what an AMAZING drive that was. I drove to the end of H1 to 72, past Hanamao Bay (where I went snorkeling the first Sunday), and past the blow hole, and made my first stop at beautiful Sandy Beach. Sandy Beach is a hotspot for bodyboarders, and is also known to have notorious undercurrents and shorebreaks, making it the beach with most lifeguard rescues in Oahu. The waves were kicking at about 6-8 feet today, just enough to produce a pipeline, and there were bodyboarders taking full advantage. I would not tassle with those sized waves, given that I can barely catch a 3 foot wave myself, but it was sure fun watching them. Some of em were even doing the thing where you slide down the beach standing on your board as you hit the breaking wave and flip up in the air. Definitely quite entertaining!

Past Sandy Beach after a few miles I hit Makapu'u point. which lies overlooking Makapu'u beach park below, and forms Oahu's easternmost point. This is another big bodyboarding beach. From the lookout point you can climb up the Makapuu trail towards the lighthouse, which overlooks the windward coast to the north and south. What a spectacular view! (see picture share) You can see the mini Rabbit and Turtle island, and the pair of islands off of Lanikai farther in the distance, and the whole coastline. You can usually see a lot of humpback whales from this point, and even climb down to some secluded beach area but I didn't stay long and figured I'll be back here when my sister and company visit. But the view was amazing, I really wish I had the digicam! We'll see how the crappy disposable fuji prints come out. I finished by going up through Lanikai and Kailua, and then back down to Honolulu from the Pali highway. Great drive. Today I am venturing up to the North Shore! Another beautiful sunny day to ride with the top down!

Pro Bowl Weekend

So much happens, and we do so much here, I realized it is impossible to keep the blog updated, especially given the lack of my internet access. Not to mention I have pics in everyone else's cameras which takes longer for me to acquire, so bear with me!  In case you've missed my earlier posts, the first one with nice pics you can find at: First Oahu Post

Last weekend was the Pro Bowl, which was fun, because you could see pro-bowl football stars everywhere. I would walk to through the Hilton Hawaiian Village (what an amazing hotel!!) and see them hanging by the pool and bar signing autographs, and you'd always see a few out at night at various bars and clubs. It was also weird because you knew it was the pro-bowl weekend by the influx of new type of toursits coming for the game. You also knew the players were there simply by the fact that the first 2 weeks I probably saw maybe 1 or 2 black people per week, and now suddenly they are everywhere, rolling in groups of 3 or more, all thugged out--the player and his crew.

There were events the whole weekend, including a pro-bowl beach bowling competition, which was fun to see Dante, TO, Ahman, and others go at it in bowling--in the end it was Mitch Berger vs. TO for the last frame, and TO got beatdown by the punter, it was great. They had some festival in Kapiolani park as well, and other things like a golf tournament, concert, and charity events. The biggest complaining by fans you heard as you went around was that of TO not signing autographs. From the aiport, to the events, to the game, TO refused to sign anybody's autograph, and everyone was bitching about it Classic cocky TO if you ask me.

I also managed to get myself on TV. ESPN was shooting NFL Life clips from the beach, with a stage they had set up. Me and a few of us got behind the camera, and frantically were calling our friends from our cells to confirm that we were in fact on TV. And of course, waving like animals in the background, was a bunch of grown men on their cell phones flashing aloha signs and jumping up and down. Look Ma, I'm on TV.

A few of my friends had tickets, but we never got them, but we didn't let that stop our fun. We headed to Aloha stadium to join the tailgate partying and my friend knew some people tailgating, so we just joined the fun. Peole were hardcore, with full out pig roasts, bands set up playin music, and intense tailgate barbecues. Great to tailgate in shorts in the warm air during February, gotta love it. It is kinda nice that the weeknd is over though, because it was just way too crowded on the island with all those tourists hangin around! (I really seem to think that I live here now.)  Pics later...
