The plan today was to hit up lunch at Hock Lam Beef, which is supposed to have the best beef noodle soup in the area. With its savory broth, fresh noodles, swimming with little beef meatballs and pieces of sliced tender beef, I was looking forward to it all morning. So we get to Far East Square where it is, and lo and behold - the shop is closed for the week!! Company retreat. Damn. I won't lie I was a little upset. Granted we had plenty of other options surrounding us, but you know when you got your mind set on something, that's all you want. (Sort of like Harold and Kumar when they wanted those tender little White Castle burgers, with those glistening little onions on them... I felt their pain today) ... Anyways, we instead satisfied our hunger at a nice little tasty japanese joint not too far away, which was actually quite good, but still... Hock Lam - 1 Ali - 0.
After lunch, we hit up the Singapore Flyer - this sort of touristy ferris wheel that gave us some nice views of the city, and despite the rain, we managed some good photos. We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring some of the other streets and neighborhoods. Club street was a cute street with several trendy and hip cafes and bars hugging the sidewalks. Later we walked over to Arab street, which is - you guessed it - the "Arab" district. Here is where the Sultan Mosque is and the surrounding area is filled with Persian, Turkish, and other middle eastern shops, restaurants and cafes serving up kebabs, hookahs and tea, and plenty of souvenirs. You could also swing by here to pick up a fashionable burka or stop by some of the cool cafes or boutique shops that are intertwined within. Our day ended with a drive through little India. Bollywood music blaring the streets, rickshaws cycling tourists thorugh the streets, the aroma of fresh kebabs and jalabis emanating the streets, and pretty much stores selling almost anything you desire - from Indian and beyond. Supposedly the briyani in this area is world renound!
Last day in Singapore... Off to Koh Samui, Thailand next!
